The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II FE lens is a versatile portrait to telephoto length zoom lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. This updated version is almost 30% lighter than its predecessor and reflects the technological advances over time that will enhance performance greatly for both stills and video applications. As part of Sonys G Master series it is designed to produce exceptional imagery. The lens features a fast f/2.8 constant aperture that benefits working in dim conditions and affords greater depth of field control. Optically the lens a combination of two aspherical elements, including one XA (extreme aspherical) element, two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, two Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, and one ED aspherical element ensures high resolution and reduces chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for corner to corner sharpness and clarity. A Nano AR coating II has also been applied to control ghosting and lens flare, and the front element uses a further fluorine coating for protection against marks and smudges. The fast aperture and advanced optical design complement a new 11-blade aperture unit for natural circular bokeh.
Close-up bokeh is also impressive, with a minimum focusing distane of 40cm (at 70mm). Partnering the optics for superb performance is a brand-new autofocus (AF) system that employs four of Sonys original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear motors that boosts autofocus speed up to 4 times faster. Focus tracking while zooming, for example, features a 30% or so improvement when compared to its predecessor, thus increasing the likelihood of capturing the subject in motion. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 30 fps with AF and the silent operation benefits video applications. A marked reduction of focus breathing and focus shift combines with the improved autofocus performance and a Linear Response MF system to optimise its video recording capabilities. Full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) enables quick manual adjustments using the focus ring while in AF modes. The inclusion of an advanced OSS (Optical SteadyShot) image stabilization ensures sharp handheld shooting even at slower shutter speeds as well as the longest focal length. Multiple OSS modes are available to suit your needs, including Mode 1 for standard, general image stabilisation,
Mode 2 for panning, and a new Mode 3 for moving subjects. Three programmable focus hold buttons, which are located in 90-degree increments, an AF/MF switch, and focus range limiter make handling this lens even more intuitive, and the included removable tripod mount has a rotating design to make switching between horizontal and vertical shooting positions simple. An addition of a physical aperture ring enables de-clicking at the flip of a switch of smooth iris control during shooting while an iris lock switch prevents accidental movement to and from the auto aperture position. It is also dust and moisture-sealed for working in inclement conditions. The zoom torque has also been optimised. Lighter and more balanced with an internal zoom mechanism, the lens has been improved for greater ergonomics. This lens comes supplied with a lens hood that features a locking button and a filter window to ease adjustment of variable filters, front and rear lens caps, and aforementioned tripod mount, and a soft case. Compatibility with separately available 1.4x and 2x FE teleconverters means the lenss long reach can be further extended.
