The FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens from Sony is a telephoto lens for full-frame E-mount cameras, ideal for sports, wildlife and action photographers. It is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range. As part of Sony's G Master series, it is designed to achieve high resolution and sharpness by targeting and correcting a variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations.
The optical design uses one Super ED and two ED elements for increased clarity and colour fidelity, as well as Nano AR Coating to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting. A floating elements system benefits image quality when working at the 98 cm minimum focusing distance with 0.35x magnification. This is complimented by a rounded nine-blade diaphragm to produce attractive out of focus 'bokeh' areas.
A Direct Drive SSM system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. The lens is also equipped with Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation to minimise the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery when working with slower shutter speeds. This stabilisation system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilisation for more effective control of camera blur.
The lens is completed with a robust and intuitive physical design that includes a zoom torque adjustment ring that lets users dial in the stiffness of the zoom mechanism, and a focus range limiter switch for faster focusing. It also features multiple customisable focus hold buttons, an AF/MF switch, and a removable and rotatable tripod mount. It is finished with a dust- and weather-resistant construction with a fluorine-coated front lens element to help prevent smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
The FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens is also compatible with Sony's optional 1.4x and 2x FE teleconverters for reaching distances of up to 800mm.
