Designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras, the Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S lens from Nikon is a short telephoto prime with a focal length poised for portraiture. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture supports working in dimmer lighting, along with improved control over depth of field for isolating subjects. Optically, the lens features 12 elements in 8 groups, including two extra-low dispersion elements to achieve high clarity and colour fidelity by reducing colour fringing and chromatic aberrations. In addition, surface and internal reflections are kept to a minimal to reduce lens flare and ghosting via the applications of a Nano Crystal Coating and Super Integrated Coating.
For impressively quick, quiet and accurate autofocusing performance that suits both stills and video applications, the lens utilises a multi-focus system that incorporates two synchronised AF drives units with stepping motors. Full-time manual focus override is available for fine-tuning focus. For added flexibility, the control ring for adjusting manual focus can also be programmed for adjusting other camera and exposure settings, such as aperture control and exposure compensation. The lens also features an internal focusing design to maintain the len's overall length during use and for promoting faster focusing speeds. Fast continuous shooting rates, on the other hand, benefits from the greater exposure control provided by the specialised electromagnetic aperture mechanism. The dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel enables working in less than ideal weather conditions. A supplied lens hood provides the front element with some protection from accidental damage while shielding the lens from flare.
