An ideal prime for shooting sports, action, and wildlife, the Nikon Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is a super telephoto prime lens characterised by its built-in teleconverter as well as its bright aperture, and sophisticaled optical, autofocus, and VR systems. Indeed, the Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S distinguishes itself with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter that allows user to effective extend the lenss reach to an effective 560mm f/4 on-the-fly by simply flipping the right-hand switch. The integrated construction of the teleconverter within the lens housing means it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance while maintaining the lens weather sealing. With a fast and bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, the lens suits working in dimmer conditions and offers better depth of field control for isolating subjects from a busy background. Optically, a combination of two extra-low dispersion (ED) and one Super ED glass elements, two lightweight fluorite elements, and a short-wavelength refractive (SR) element helps to minimise chromatic aberrations, colour fringing, and comatic aberrations for sharp, clear and colour-accurate images. The lens employ a Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (VCM) that uses magnets* instead of gears for even faster, more accurate, and smoother autofocusing. Additionally, a guidebar is employed to help reduce focusing vibrations for greater continuous focusing speeds while an optical ABS (absolute) encorder detects and communicates lens position information with impressive accuracy for optimally fast and accurate autofocus performance. The multi-focusing system reduces focus breathing markedly for improved compositional accuracy. Benefitting video applications, the Silky Swift VCM is very quiet.
The lens also features full-time manual focus override and an internal focusing design is utilised to maintain its overall length to promote faster focusing speeds. Further supporting sharp images, the lens features a Vibration Reduction (VR) image stablisation that reduces the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops that benefits handheld shooting in low-light conditions. When paired with compatible cameras featuring sensor-shift VR, Synchro VR combines the in-body VR with optical VR for improved results. The updated physical design renders this lens lighter and more user friendly. Even with an integrated built-in teleconverter, this Z-mount lens is 20% lighter than the F-mount 400 f/2.8, partly thanks to its lightweight and durable magnesium alloy contruction. The physical design of the lens focuses the center of gravity around the tripod for smoother and more responsive panning, especially when atop a tripod or monopod. Moreover, the tripod mount rotates for easier switching between horizontal and vertical orientations. With advanced weather sealing and a fluorine coating on the front and rear elements, dirt, moisture, and oils are repelled and cleaning is easier. Frequently used buttons and dials are placed in easy-to-reach locations for intuitive use and minimal need to take your eye off the viewfinder. In case you do, a focusing position can be stored using the Memory Set button so that you can instantly return to this by rotating the Fn ring. To suit individual workflow and working habits, two customisable L-Fn buttons are available for configuring subject traacking, AF lock, image playback, or other modes and they are accessible from four different locations on the barrel to easy access, as well as a programmable control ring can be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation. A focus limiter switch can constrain the focus range from 6m to infinity and 2.5m to infinity while a Kensington lock helps to secure the lens in place during remote shooting sessions. The lens uses drop-in 46mm filters via the included filter holder and is compatible with optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters for even further reach. Front and rear lens caps, a lens hood, lens strap, and lens case are also supplied here. *WARNING: Do not use this product if you have a pacemaker or other medical device.
