The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is an exceptionally long reaching telephoto lens, with a comparatively compact and lightweight form factor. To achieve this reduction in overall size and weight it uses a unique Phase Fresnel element. This PF element, along with three extra-low dispersion elements, also helps to virtually eliminate colour fringing and chromatic aberrations to capture sharp images with true colour. The individual elements also feature both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings to reduce flare and ghosting, and a protective fluorine coating helps to protect the optical system from dust and moisture. Designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length. The lens uses a Silent Wave Motor AF for fast and quiet focusing, ideal for both stills and video. It can also be instantly manually overridden by simply turning the focus ring. This is complimented by VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilisation which works to compensate for the effects of camera shake by four stops, for sharper handheld shooting and low light performance. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system. An electromagnetic aperture mechanism is also integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates. It is compatible with separately available AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.
