The Ilford Microphen is a fine grain developer that not only enables an increase in film speed, but has been specially formulated to overcome the disadvantage with most developers that increase film speed to also increase in grain size. Thus, the Microphen boasts a high speed to grain ratio, and can bring about speed increase for many films. The developer can also afford a higher speed for meter settings up to El 3200/36 when used with the Ilford HPS Plus film. Recommended for obtaining the maximum film speed with films that can be pushed processed, it is ideal for use at the faster end of the exposure range. Additionally, the low alkalinity of the developer prevents grain clumping. Microphen performs with remarkable consistency thoughout its working life. Its powder form is made up to a stock solution for normal tank and tray use. For those who prefer to use fresh solution each time, the solution can be further diluted 1+1 or 1+3.
