Super Telephoto Lens for Canon EF-mount

Designed as a speedy sports lens for tracking and capturing distant subjects, the Canon EF-mount 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport Lens from Sigma is a high performing long-reach lens that is ideal for sports, wildlife, and nature photographers. While the lens is designed for full frame Canon EF-mount cameras, it can also be used with APS-C models to provide a 800mm equivalent focal length. A relatively fast f/4 maximum aperture provides excellent illumination for a lens of this focal length.

Offering excellent optical performance, the super telephoto lens employs two FLD (F Low Dispersion) elements and one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements within its optical design to produce well-corrected imagery with reduced chromatic aberrations and colour fringing throughout the focusing range. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Complementing the optical aspects, the lens is also characterized by an apt Optical Stabilizer system that helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4 stops of shutter speed for sharper handheld shooting. Two seperate modes are made available: one for general use and one for panning, which utilises intelligent OS for improved panning in any direction. An integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, also provides quick, quiet focusing performance, which is further enhanced and complemented by an optimised AF algorithim to produce an even smoother focusing performance. Additionally, the employment of specialised electromagnetic aperture mechanism improves exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The tough lens body is constructed using a durable and lightweight magnesium alloy to permit usage in trying conditions while the bayonet is constructed of brass to provide improved mounting accuracy and rigidity. Even the lens hood is constructed of carbon fiber for lightweight and durable properties. To further benefit working in harsh climates, the lens features dust- and splash-proof construction with rubber sealing to protect the mount. An added water- and oil-repellent coating on the front and rear elements offers easier cleaning. One of the switches on the lens barrel offers manual focus override for whenever more precise focusing control is desired; Full-time manual focus control is also available via rotation of the focus ring at any time. A integrated rotating tripod collar provides well-balanced support during shoots. It features antistatic nickel plating for improved durability and comes with a dedicated strap to limit strain on the camera mount.

Featuring a drop-in filter system, the lens accepts 46mm filters. The lens is compatible with the separately available Sigma 1.4x and 2x Teleconverters whereby their respective use can extend the 500mm f/4 sport lens into a 700mm f/5.6 lens, or a 1000mm f/8 lens. Meanwhile, the optional Sigma USB Dock can be used to update its firmware and fine-tune different lens characteristics.
