Its fast and bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions throughout the zoom range, as well as enable greater control over depth of field. Its optical design achieves impressive sharpness and clarity via an incorporation of four aspherical elements, including two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements, and three extra-low dispersion elements for suppressing spherical and chromatic aberrations.
A Nano AR Coating on the elements reduces surface reflections and flare for improved contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions. Benefitting the optics, an XD Linear Motor system delivers fast and silent autofocusing performance whilst also contributing to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. Customisable focus hold buttons on the lens barrel promote intuitive tactile control and quick access to select settings. The dust- and moisture-sealed lens permits working in inclement weather and rubberised control rings eases handling in cold climate. A flourine coating on the front element lends to easier cleaning and helps to resist dust, moisture, and fingerprints. The lens comes supplied with front and rear caps, a lens hood, and a lens case.
